Your vehicle's suspension does much more than simply improve ride comfort by buffering you against the bumps in the road. It also plays a critical role in keeping the tires in contact with the road, while supporting proper handling. In many modern cars the suspension system even works with the steering and braking to optimize the traction control system.

As your car’s suspension components start to wear out, you’ll gradually notice changes in the way your vehicle rides, handles or deals with bumps in the road.

At M & R Automotive, our certified automotive service technicians have tools and training to diagnose a wide range of suspension problems and repair them. We service all makes and models and serve drivers throughout the Bay Area.

Comprehensive Suspension System Inspection

Our automotive service technicians thoroughly inspect every component of a vehicle’s suspension system to determine the state of each component. This gives us a comprehensive picture of what might need to be repaired or replaced.

Shocks and Struts

A vehicle’s shocks and struts play a critical role in controlling not just ride comfort when you drive over bumps and potholes. They also play a role in how the vehicle handles.

Worn shocks and struts allow excessive bouncing, and body movement resulting in a less controlled ride. The simply bouncing effect of going over a bump or pothole reduces the weight and traction of the tire’s relationship with the road surface.

At the same time, a vehicle with worn shocks or struts tends to develop uneven tire wear as the tires don’t maintain consistent contact with the road. This manifests as the tread wearing out prematurely on the inside or outside of the tire.

Control Arms and Bushings

Control arms play an important role in guiding the movement of the wheels as you steer. The vehicle’s bushing helps cushion movement between suspension components and the vehicle's frame or body.

When bushings start to wear out or control-arm components deteriorate, you might start to hear clunking noises when you drive over bumps. As time goes on, you’ll likely notice changes in steering and how it handles.

Springs, Ball Joints and Sway Bar Components

A vehicle’s springs help support the weight of the vehicle and help maintain a safe ride height in the wheel wells. Weakened or damaged springs may cause one corner of the vehicle to sit lower than the others or change the way the vehicle handles.

Ball joints also play an important role in controlling the movement between suspension components. They also work with sway bar links and other suspension components to control body movement during turns.

Wear in any of these areas may affect handling. We will determine whether replacement or additional suspension service is needed.

Suspension Repair and Front-End Alignment

Suspension repairs and front-end wheel alignment often go together. Replacing or repairing certain suspension components may change wheel angles. This usually requires adjusting the camber, toe and caster of the wheel alignment.

This ensures the tires maintain the intended relationship with the road. It also helps reduce irregular tread wear and keeps the vehicle tracking properly.
